BMT Works for New York explores how a fully working waterfront could connect food distribution, housing production, and family-sustaining careers.
Explore receiving, cold storage, shared purchasing, and distribution by water—with the goal of lowering food costs for neighborhood grocers, public institutions, and the people they serve.
Connect maritime operations, manufacturing, and logistics to paid training, apprenticeships, and lasting, family-sustaining union jobs for New Yorkers.
Explore making modular homes and building components on-site, alongside receiving and staging construction materials, then delivering them by water to support housing construction throughout New York.
The connection is the water
The proposal would connect BMT to a waterborne freight network, moving food, building materials, and factory-built housing modules toward neighborhoods across the city—with the goal of reducing reliance on trucks.
